Control introduced predators (primarily non-native rats, mongooses, and feral cats) via trapping to protect endangered birds and control pests, 75%; monitor endangered birds--Hawaiian Petrel and Hawaiian Goose--for nesting activity and production of young, 20%; data entry and other duties as assigned, 5%. Daily solo hiking/backpacking over rugged,
steep volcanic terrain at high elevations (6000-10,000 ft.) in harsh weather conditions and includes 3-4 day backcountry trips. MUST BE IN EXCELLENT PHYSICAL CONDITION.
Location Description
This position is based at the summit district of the park; work is conducted in the surrounding subalpine shrubland and cinder desert. The area is remote with limited staff housing and no public transportation. The nearest stores are about 20 miles away.
Training Provided
In-park training opportunities include: trapping techniques, endangered species monitoring and surveying, CPR and 1st aide. Helicopter safety training may be available
Educational/Recreational Opportunities
Educational opportunities are available through Park training programs. Recreational opportunities include in-park hiking, and various out of park activities including beach activities, biking, movies, etc.
